When Ron from South Australia went looking for new accommodation to support his adaptive equipment requirements, he didn’t expect to find a new home so quickly. While mobility was a crucial factor in Ron’s decision making on where to live, he also wanted to be closer to his son Carter and live with a service provider that would support his dream of getting a pet dog. Ron also wanted a spacious bedroom with his own ensuite. Within five minutes of viewing one of our homes and seeing how spacious and private it was, he had already chosen his bedroom.
When Ron first moved to the Cocoon SDA Care residence, he set himself two goals: 1) to be an active parent in his son Carter’s life; and 2) he wanted to be more tolerant to pain so he could spend more time out of his bed.
To achieve his first goal, we set up a room for Carter to stay overnight so they can spend as much time together as possible. This translated into Ron also achieving his second goal. He can now enjoy lunch and movie nights with Carter and spends less time in bed.
A considerable source of Ron’s new-found happiness came in canine form: his much-wanted new dog, Brian.
Ron was unable to have a dog prior to moving here but always wanted one. Now, the two are inseparable and Ron takes Brian for regular walks out in the community.
Ron did not want to engage with a dietitian service in his previous care, but since his move he has shown an interest in his nutrition. He is currently being supported by a dietitian and our staff to avoid unhealthy takeaways.
He has started eating healthy meals, which has had the added benefit of stabilising his weight.
Ron says he and Brian are very happy here. “I like that the dog can run around the house and has a large
backyard. I like the size of the cupboards and the attached shower area. I like that I am able to have a ceiling hoist.” The best part is the convenient location – only eight minutes away from where his son lives.
